What we do.
Southampton Tourist Guides Association is the longest running tour guiding organisation in Southampton, having been established since 1976. As a consortium of fully qualified tourist guides we dedicate ourselves to serving residents and visitors to the city and its surrounds in their quest to finding out what there is to know about this part of England's origins, history and culture. To this end our pages Southampton’s History and Southampton – In Brief show the near limitless scope we have for contributing to a rewarding and memorable tour of our city. However, in more specific terms, be you resident or visitor, you are more likely to find what you are looking for by referring to our TEST Services drop-down pages. These pages feature such things as Public and Private Guided walking tours of the Medieval/Old town of Southampton, and include a few examples of the themed walks we also have to offer*.
If, however, your interests extend beyond our walking tours, the menu also shows several other services STGA have great experience in providing, from Coach and small group Driver/Guide tours, to Illustrated ‘Armchair’ talks and Cruise Ship ‘Meet and Greet’ facilities.
If you have particular needs or requests and have dates and times in mind, take a look at our STGA Calendar in the same dropdown menu, tell us what and when they are, then submit an on-line provisional booking (Contact menu) and we’ll be more than happy to take it from there.
* Please note that, as usual when negotiating medieval constructions, some of our walks include parts that are unsuitable for wheelchair bound clients or people with other forms of mobility-limiting disability. In such cases we can often provide alternative routes and/or means of interpretation. If you feel that such considerations need to be looked at in you or your group’s case, tell us about them in our on-line Provisional Booking Form (Contact menu) and we’ll do our level best to accommodate them.
Who we are.
STGA has been established for more than 30 years and is affiliated to the Institute of Tourist Guiding (ITG), the registered authority for Blue and Green Badge guides in the United Kingdom. The Association subscribes to ITG’s standard setting authority for the whole tourist guiding sector – as recognised by the UK Government. All Southampton Tourist Guides have qualified for coveted Blue or Green Badges awarded by the Southern Tourist Board on successful completion of training courses leading to rigorous examinations in regional or local knowledge and practical guiding. Members also hold a variety of further specialist tourism qualifications for other areas such as Winchester and Salisbury Cities and Cathedrals, the West Country and other areas of Great Britain. Many members have degrees or other professional qualifications, such as history, archaeology, agriculture, engineering, human resource management, languages and education, irrespective of grade, all our guides are trained to very high standards in customer care, presentation skills and site interpretation.
